Equivalent fractions are different fractions that have the same value. They may look different on paper, but they cover the same amount of one whole.

The whole is split into a different number of equal parts in each bar, yet the shaded color ends halfway across every one. That shared endpoint is the meaning of equivalent.

An equivalent fraction is a fraction with a different numerator and denominator that represents the same amount as another fraction. For example, 1/2, 2/4, and 4/8 all mean one-half.
Equivalent fractions do not use the same numbers. They have the same value. The fraction name changes because the whole is divided into a different number of equal parts.
The word equivalent
In math, equivalent means equal in value. A half, two fourths, and four eighths are different fraction names, but every one represents the same location between zero and one.

Read the relationship
The numerator, denominator, and size of one part can all change. Fourths are smaller pieces than halves, and eighths are smaller still.
The whole, total shaded amount, fraction value, and endpoint of the colored bar do not move.
Changing one half into two fourths does not double the amount. It gives the same amount a new name after each half has been split into two smaller equal pieces.
