What Is a Mixed Number?

A mixed number writes an amount as a whole number plus a proper fraction — 2 3/4 means 2 + 3/4, the same value as the improper fraction 11/4 and the decimal 2.75. This page defines it, places it on the number line, and connects it to every operation that uses it.

  • the space means addition

Result

2 3/4

= (2 × 4 + 3)/4

= 11/4

Both forms use the same pieces; only the writing changes.
Mixed form: 2 wholes and 3/411/4
Improper form: count every selected part11/4

Light and dark blue separate complete wholes from the leftover part. The selected pieces never move; the notation changes.

Quick answer

A whole and a part, written in one amount

In 2 3/4, the whole-number part (2) counts complete wholes and the fraction part (3/4) counts pieces of another whole — always a proper fraction, with a numerator smaller than its denominator. The space between them means addition.

The name “mixed” describes the notation, not the value: the amount is an ordinary number sitting a quarter of the way between 2 and 3 on the number line.

The anatomy

Three parts of 2 3/4

PartIn 2 3/4What it means
Whole-number part2Two complete wholes — two fully shaded bars.
Fraction part3/4Three parts of a third bar split into four equal pieces — always a proper fraction.
The space between2 3/4The space means addition: 2 3/4 = 2 + 3/4 = 2.75 on the number line.

Four mixed numbers and their improper twins

Each row names one amount twice — once as a whole plus a part, once as a single fraction. Run any of them through the converter above to watch the two forms agree.

2 3/4Two whole bars plus three of four equal pieces.11/4

A mixed number sits between two whole numbers

On the number line, 2 3/4 lives a quarter of the way between 2 and 3. That position is the everyday advantage of the form: you can see at a glance that the amount tops 2 but falls short of 3, which an improper fraction like 11/4 hides until you divide.

The fraction part is always proper — smaller than one whole. If the fraction part reaches or passes the denominator, as in 2 5/4, the writing is not a finished mixed number: 5/4 holds another whole, so the standard form regroups to 3 1/4.

Every mixed number has an improper-fraction twin

The two forms name one amount. The multiply-add-keep formula converts mixed to improper (2 3/4 → (2 × 4 + 3)/4 = 11/4), and a division with remainder converts back (11 ÷ 4 = 2 remainder 3 → 2 3/4). Neither form is more correct; each is easier for a different job.

Reading is the mixed number’s strength — amounts, recipes, and measurements prefer "two and three quarters". Calculating is the improper fraction’s strength — multiplying, dividing, and comparing run on one numerator and one denominator. That division of labour is why students learn both forms and move between them.

Where the name comes from

"Mixed" describes the form, not the value: one whole number mixed with one proper fraction in a single written quantity. The value itself is an ordinary number on the number line, no different from 2.75 or 11/4 — only the notation mixes two kinds of part into one numeral.

This is also why a mixed number is not "a whole number and a fraction glued together" for every purpose. In addition and subtraction the two columns can be worked separately (with regrouping), but multiplication and division require merging into the improper form first. The notation mixes; the arithmetic follows the value.

What Is a Mixed Number FAQ

A mixed number combines a whole number with a proper fraction, and the space between them means addition: 2 3/4 = 2 + 3/4. It names an amount between two whole numbers — here, a quarter of the way from 2 to 3 — and equals the improper fraction 11/4.
